Zoe McKinney’s Daughter Dies While Walking
While hiking in Grand County, Utah, 17-year-old Zoe McKinney died after falling.
Around 4:10 p.m. Friday, the young woman was hiking with a group of friends on the Moab Rim Trail in the Kane Creek Canyon area when she slipped and fell 30 feet off a cliff, Moab Police said.
Her friends tried to reach her on 911 but were unable to reach her safely.
Search and rescue teams, along with other first responders, responded immediately. They used harnesses and climbing gear to rappel down to the teenager.
When they got to her, the girl had already died as a result of the fall and rescuers had to spend the next two hours finding her body, police said.
While the reason for the girl’s loss of balance is unknown, Moab Deputy Police Commissioner Lex Bell told KSL the young woman was “too close to the edge” in a challenging hiking area.
Moab Police Chief Jared Garcia expressed his department’s heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
“We recognize the negative impact on this small community of the loss of a beloved young wife and friend, but we know that great people will come together in Moab to support and comfort their family and friends during this time,” she added.
