The incident occurred during a change of scene at the start of a performance of Sadko, a 19th-century opera by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
The theater said Yevgeny Kulesh, who had been in the theater since 2002, died on the spot when the audience was kicked out of the performance hall.
The Moscow investigative committee said in a statement it was investigating the death of the 38-year-old artist, while former actors from the Bolshoi Theater condemned the working conditions at the world-famous venue.

The Bolshoi Theater Company told Interfax that Kulesh was seriously injured and died in the crash in which he was crushed under the stage before an ambulance arrived.
The actor is said to have moved in the wrong direction during a scene change when the scene was lowered and then trapped below.
