Shot Neighbor, Dog, And Himself
On Berkshire Avenue, Victor Nieves is accused of breaking into his neighbor’s apartment, which is part of a shared apartment building. After that, he allegedly began shooting the neighboring family.
The unfortunate incident resulted in the death of the neighbor involved, Kim Fairbanks, 52, and a dog. Two other girls, aged 12 and 10, were also shot dead. The 10-year-old girl was flown to Boston Children’s Hospital where she is currently in critical condition.
The 12-year-old patient is doing well during treatment at Baystate Medical Center. Fortunately, his five-year-old younger brother was not physically injured. The three children, the District Attorney revealed, are Fairbanks’ grandsons.
Police Investigation Report
Despite their best efforts, investigators were unable to determine a plausible reason for the shooting. In a statement, District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said,
“This is undoubtedly one of the most heinous and cowardly acts I have witnessed in my role as District Attorney. My thoughts and prayers are with the parents of these children, as well as the family and loved ones of Mrs. Fairbanks. We, as investigators, will do whatever we can to assist this family as we continue and complete the criminal investigation.”
Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl C. Clapprood said in a statement, “This is an absolute tragedy and I am praying for this family.”
This is one of the most tragic incidents I have remembered with the Springfield Police Department in over forty years can remember.
