The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has rolled out stricter academic rules for future medical and dental students, mandating 90% class attendance and 70% exam scores to pass. Approved during its 85th Syndicate meeting, these changes follow the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) guidelines and take effect from the 2025-26 session.

From the next academic year that is 2025, first-year MBBS and BDS students must attend 90% of classes to qualify for annual exams. Those missing the cutoff will be barred from sitting for tests—a sharp rise from the current 85% rule.

Higher Passing Marks for Medical Students

Exam clearance gets tougher: students must now secure 70% marks in professional exams, up from 50%. This shift aims to match “global standards,” though concerns linger about added pressure on aspirants.

Who Needs to Follow the New Rules?

Only students joining MBBS/BDS programs in 2025 or later face the stricter norms. Existing students stay under older policies (85% attendance, 50% pass marks).

MBBS Seat Increase in Private Colleges

Two private colleges—Sahara Medical College (Narowal) and Sharif Medical College (Lahore)—can now admit 150 MBBS students annually, up from 100 seats. The move follows PM&DC’s approval to address rising demand.

Why the Sudden Change?

UHS claims the updates matches to the PM&DC’s vision for “quality medical education” Critics, however, question whether support systems—like tutoring or grace periods—will ease the transition for students.
