In observance of Ramadan, a significant month in the Islamic calendar, the UAE has implemented a reduction in work hours for employees in the private sector. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced that private sector workers will now have their daily work hours shortened by two hours during this sacred period.

UAE Working Hours For Private Sector in Ramadan 2024

Private companies are granted the flexibility to arrange for adjusted or remote work schedules during Ramadan, provided they adhere to the prescribed daily working hours for this period, which should align with the nature of their work. Typically, employees in the private sector of the UAE work for eight to nine hours per day.

However, during Ramadan, this timeframe will be reduced by two hours each day. Any work beyond the reduced hours will entitle employees to additional compensation for overtime.

Ramadan is anticipated to commence on March 12, 2024, according to the Hijri calendar issued by the Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD). This modified work schedule applies to both fasting and non-fasting employees, enabling everyone to engage in spiritual practices and cultural customs during Ramadan.

For government employees, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has established official working hours during Ramadan. Ministries and federal agencies will operate from 9 am to 2:30 pm from Monday to Thursday and from 9 am to 12 noon on Fridays unless the nature of their work necessitates otherwise.
