Tyre Nichols was a Memphis, Tennessee man who died on 7th January 2023, after a violent incident involving Memphis police officers that the police chief described as “appalling” and “inhuman” physical abuse.
CNN reported that the official cause of death and autopsy dated 28th January 2023, were not released. Nichols’ mother told CNN he suffered cardiac arrest, kidney failure, and a broken neck.

According to CBS News, Nichols worked as a father and skateboarder at FedEx.
Family attorney Ben Crump tweeted that Nichols was “bludgeoned to death at a traffic stop.”
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s press release, when Nichols first encountered the Memphis Police Department “at about 8:22 p.m., an altercation broke out.”
A second encounter “took place shortly after around Castlegate Lane and Bear Creek Cove, which also included a physical encounter after which Nichols, 29, was hospitalized with serious injuries.”
“On January 10, doctors pronounced him dead,” the TBI statement said.
The evidence identified the five officers as the men “who caused Nichols’ injuries,” according to TBI.
The officers were “each charged with seven counts: second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping involving bodily harm, aggravated kidnapping involving possession of a deadly weapon, misconduct, misconduct- clemency and suppression of office,” TBI reported.
Memphis Police Department body camera video released on Jan. 27, 2023, showed several officers beating Nichols. Five officers have been fired, the police chief said in a video statement; They were identified in a Memphis Police Department press release as Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr., and Justin Smith. All were hired between 2018 and 2020, police said.

Autopsy Report
An independent autopsy revealed that Nichols was suffering from “profuse bleeding from severe beatings,” according to a press release from family attorney Ben Crump.
CNN reported that the full independent autopsy report has yet to be released. Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, described her condition to CNN.
Wells told CNN, “My son got hit like a piñata. These men weighed over 1,000 pounds when you add up their weights and beat and beat a 150 pound person to death.”
“The doctor told me that my son went into cardiac arrest and his kidneys were failing,” he told CNN.
“It doesn’t seem consistent with someone being tasered or pepper sprayed.”
