The United Arab Emirates is Seeing A Rise in Schengen Visa Scams

VFS Global, a visa application company, has issued a warning about scammers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) selling fake Schengen visa appointments.

Due to a surge in travel demand in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, UAE residents have found it difficult to get an appointment for a Schengen visa during the peak summer travel season, prompting many to postpone or cancel their holiday plans.

As quoted by Arabian Business, Monaz Billimoria, Deputy Director of VFS Global in the United Arab Emirates, reported an increase in scammers exploiting people by selling them fake visa appointments. These scammers abuse the high demand for “revenge trips” and limited appointments that the Schengen area embassies in the Emirates are offering.

Low-income earners looking for economic opportunities abroad are also targeted by these scammers, who falsely promise a visa and a job in a Schengen country. The scams are not only limited to the United Arab Emirates but also occur in Southeast Asia and Africa.

To avoid scheduling problems, residents have been advised to book appointments ahead of time, especially before public holidays or during the busier travel season. Appointments can be made up to six months in advance of the travel date to avoid last-minute difficulties.

In 2023, VFS saw a 20% increase in travel demand compared to the previous year, making it one of its busiest years.

Unlike UK visa applicants who have priority and super priority services for quicker decisions, Schengen visa applicants do not have such options and there is no indication that these services will be available any time soon.
