The First Female Astronaut From The UAE To Graduate From NASA
The first female astronaut from the Emirates is expected to graduate from a NASA program early next year, qualifying for US-led space missions.
Astronaut Nora Al Matrooshi and her colleague Mohammed Al Mulla have been training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston since January 2022.
You will follow in the footsteps of Hazza Al Mansouri, the first Emirati in space, and Sultan Al Neyadi, who is currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on the longest space mission in the Arab world.
Al Matrooshi and Al Mulla recently completed training exercises in the United States as part of NASA’s 2021 Astronaut Candidate Training Program. They are expected to graduate as certified astronauts in early 2024. Maj Al Mansouri and Al Neyadi completed the program last year.
Al Matrooshi became the first Arab woman selected for an astronaut corps in 2020, while Rayyanah Barnawi of Saudi Arabia last month became the first Arab woman to go on a space mission.
In a video released by NASA, Al Matrooshi and Al Mulla could be seen during their training sessions, which included survival training in a remote Alabama forest and exploring lunar simulations at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
At NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, they learned how to wear a spacewalk suit and also receive training in flying supersonic aircraft and understanding space station systems.
