Thailand is going to launch its fully operational electronic visa (e-Visa) system on January 1, 2025, aiming to make the visa application process faster and simpler for travelers worldwide.
This development represents a significant step in modernizing Thailand’s entry procedures. Visitors from around the globe will soon be able to apply for an e-Visa through the official portal, www.thaievisa.go.th.
Expansion of the e-Visa Program
During the “Kick-off THAI E-VISA: Apply, Anywhere, Anytime” event on December 17, 2024, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa announced the system’s full rollout. Covering all 94 Thai embassies and consulates, this initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to digitize travel processes and make them more accessible.
Minister Sangiampongsa shared that the expanded e-Visa system is designed to attract a diverse range of visitors, including tourists, business professionals, students, digital nomads, and investors. It’s part of Thailand’s broader vision to strengthen its role as a global hub for tourism and international business.

Benefits Travelers Can Expect
The e-Visa system brings several improvements, such as:
- Less paperwork.
- Faster processing times.
- Better coordination with agencies for smoother entry.
By moving entirely to a digital platform, the system removes unnecessary steps, aligning with Thailand’s goal of simplifying travel.
Phased Rollout and Testing
Initially launched in 2019 for select European missions, the e-Visa system has gradually expanded. By October 2024, it was available in 59 embassies and consulates, allowing thorough testing before the global launch in January 2025. The latest additions include regions like India, Pakistan, Laos, and Kuwait.
Visa Waiver for Short Stays
Since mid-2024, Thailand has offered a 60-day visa waiver for citizens of 93 countries, encouraging short-term visits for tourism and business. This complements the e-Visa system, further improving Thailand’s reputation as a top travel destination.

Looking Ahead: Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
Plans are in process for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in 2025, which aims to provide an even faster entry process for travelers from visa-exempt countries. While details are still being finalized, the ETA is expected to benefit visitors from regions like Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.
These initiatives reflect Thailand’s commitment to creating a seamless travel experience and reinforcing its position as a leading destination for global travelers.
