What Were The Details Of An Incident?
According to a news release issued Wednesday by the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the victims of the attack were Summer Myomic and her son, Clyde Ongtowasruk.
The Anchorage Daily News reported that the mother and son were walking between the Kingikmiut School building and a clinic when the bear entered the community around 2:30 p.m. and began manhandling the couple near the Kingikmiut School’s main entrance
As the attack unfolded, community members and school workers appeared to try to scare the animal away with shovels, according to the Associated Press. The polar bear chased her into the school, causing the principal to slam the door to keep him out.
“The bear was trying to get inside her,” Bering Strait School District superintendent Susan R. Nedza told the Anchorage Daily News. A remote city of about 150 people, Wales is located on the Seward Peninsula and is the westernmost point of the Americas on the Bering Strait.
While experts believe melting ice in the area may be behind the bear’s interaction with the city, a GoFundMe account for relatives says it was the first fatal attack by a polar bear in Alaska in more than 30 years.
According to the fundraiser, Myomic, Clyde and their immediate family have been living at school in Wales having recently faced electrical problems at their home. The money will help his family repair their house and return to their residence.
In an update Thursday, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said an Alaska State Trooper and a representative from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game surrendered to Wales to investigate the attack after inclement weather prevented them from making the trip to compete the day before.
On Thursday, the remains of Clyde and Myomic were taken to the prosecutor’s office for autopsy.
