Spain Introduces The Digital Nomad Visa For Freelancers

Spain is famous for its affordability, cuisine, and scenic landscapes. It has become a famous place for ex-pats. It recently introduced a “Digital Nomad Visa” to attract freelancers and remote workers to the country.

The visa went into effect in January this year following the passage of the Startups Law. The law aims to create an environment conducive to investment, talent, and entrepreneurship.

Here is everything you need to know about the Digital Nomad Visa:

Eligibility Criteria

  • Non-EU/EAA citizens working remotely as freelancers or employees.
  • Work for non-Spanish companies.
  • The applicant must not have resided in Spain in the last five years.
  • The applicant must not be in Spain illegally.

Other Requirements

  • Candidates must have at least 3 months of experience working with their current clients or companies. The company you work for must have been in business for at least a year. They must also demonstrate that they can work remotely.
  • Applicants must have at least 3 years of general work experience or be graduates/graduates of reputable universities, vocational schools, or business schools.
  • Applicants must demonstrate their financial strength by earning at least 200% of the Spanish minimum monthly wage, currently €2,334 (rupees 690,567) per month or €28,000 (rupees 8.28 million) per year. An additional 25% of this income is required for each accompanying family member.
  • Applicants must have a criminal record of the last 5 years and have full private health insurance.

Duration Of The Visa

The digital nomad visa is valid for 12 months or the duration of the employment period, whichever is shorter. It is renewable for up to 5 years. After 5 years, applicants can apply for permanent residence.

How To Register

Applicants can apply for the digital nomad visa through a consulate or embassy, or enter Spain on a tourist visa and apply for it within the first 3 months. The entire visa process can take around 15 to 45 days. The application fee is around €80 (23,669 rupees).

Required Documents

  • Completed national visa application form.
  • A valid passport and 2 passport photos.
  • Proof of employment, e.g. B. Employment contract or letter of confirmation from the employer for teleworking.
  • Proof of employer/company activity for at least one year.
  • Income proof
  • Proof of qualification, including university degree or professional qualification.
  • Proof of health insurance.
  • Criminal records extract for the last 5 years.
  • Proof of relationship to other applicants by a marriage certificate or birth certificate.

Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Malta, Romania, the Netherlands, and Norway.
