Shawn Wigham was arrested on the death of a beloved pet dealer, Fernandina Beach police said Thursday.
Wigham was arrested Thursday morning after the Nassau County Police Department and Sheriff’s Office issued search warrants to his Fernandina Beach home.

Colleen Potts Murder
In October, 73-year-old Colleen Potts was found dead by Yulee in a house on South 13th Street near Date Street in Fernandina Beach. The police called Pott’s death a ‘tragedy’.
“I think the community can breathe a sigh of relief now,” said Melinda Prevatt, a friend of Potts.
The officers said they replied shortly after 9 p.m. On October 24th at her home for a wellness check and found Potts dead inside. Investigators said she had the owner’s animals, who was out of town at the time.
Potts was last seen in his car in the early hours of the morning, the police said.

“She has always exceeded everything. It was always a job for her. It was never just anyone’s dog or cat, it was theirs,” added Prevatt.
Police found that the house she was found in was not untidy and that there was no evidence of fighting. The dogs that were guarding the house when the police arrived were also unharmed and were still in the house when the police arrived.
What Has Police Investigated Up Till Now?
Police say Wigham is currently charged with the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Authorities said more charges, including murder and robbery, are expected to be filed on Friday.
In a press release on Thursday, police said Wigham was a local handyman who “knows the area and the owner of the residence” where Potts was found.

News4Jax spoke to people on South 13th Street, including John Deutra. Deutra said that Wigham also lives on this street next to Potts’ house.
Police held a public meeting in early December to update the investigation into Potts’ death. Investigators said they conducted 25 interviews, gathered 85, evidence, took 989 photos, and examined various surveillance camera videos.
