Brian Mohl Killed in Ida Floodwaters
As per The Register Citizen, Sergeant Mohl called a patrol for help around 3:30 a.m. in Woodbury, Litchfield County, Northwest Connecticut.
During the brief conversation with dispatchers who called for help, Mohl said he was near the Jacks Bridge on the Pomperaug, the newspaper reports.
Most of his patrol car was found in the river, police said.
At a press conference, Mellekas told Mohl’s emergency number: “His vehicle was in white water and he knew he was in danger. It was the last thing they heard from him. You pinged his phone. We immediately dispatched all means with firefighters and diving teams, anything you can imagine,” he said at dawn and the researchers were able to find his vehicle in the water.
When the divers reached the vehicle, they found Mohl. He was later found in the river, Mellekas told reporters as detectives were investigating to find out what led to Mohl’s death.
Woodbury Fire Marshal Janet Murray told the Register Citizen that they had been called after a report of a vehicle on the river: “We didn’t know at the time that he was a soldier from the river state. We were used to water fasting in this area and we knew what resources we can call immediately to help us. We have done our homework and our thoughts and prayers are with the officer.”
“A LifeStar rescue helicopter was called to the scene to take Mohl to hospital, but he did not survive.”
Murray told the newspaper the area where Mohl was found was prone to flooding. “It is known for the rough waters and the flooding in this area,” he told the Register Citizen.
“Maybe the soldier just didn’t know. We didn’t have a high tide until midnight, and then it just started.”
