Several Major Universities Are Below Average: HEC
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) informed a Senate committee on Friday that the performance of many well-known universities was classified as unsatisfactory.
Senator Irfan Siddiqui chaired a meeting of the Standing Senate Committee on Education and Training in the House of Parliament where HEC officials announced that 32 universities underperformed in 2018-19.
These universities include Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), University of Karachi (KU), University of Peshawar, International Islamic University of Islamabad (IIUI), Islamia College Peshawar University, Government College Lahore University, and the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE).
“It is shocking and alarming. Institutions otherwise known for their good reputation are underperforming,” said Senator Siddiqui.

He said HEC should work to improve these institutions and asked them to justify their poor performance.
The senator also noted that many universities publish bogus journals promoting substandard research. He formed a sub-committee, headed by Senator Rana Maqbool, to review papers published by various universities, including QAU, University of Punjab, University of Peshawar, University of Balochistan, and KU.
