Education
He completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s High School in Mumbai, pursued a degree in History from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, and holds a master’s degree in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Additionally, he obtained a diploma in Public Administration from Harvard University in the USA.

Career
Rasgotra’s journey in the civil services began in 1989 when he joined the IPS. Following training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, he started his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Nagpur.
His career trajectory included significant roles as Superintendent of Police (SP) in districts like Aurangabad, Nashik, and Thane, as well as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Mumbai, where he managed the crime branch and anti-narcotics cell.
In 1998, Rasgotra’s intelligence and acumen led him to the IB as a Deputy Director. Over the years, he played a pivotal role in various covert operations and investigations related to national security.
Rising through the ranks, he became the Additional Director in 2023, overseeing IB operations and administration.
New Role as ITBP Chief
Rahul Rasgotra assumed the role of Chief of the ITBP in December 2023, succeeding SS Deswal upon his retirement. Notably, he is the first IPS officer from the Maharashtra cadre to lead the ITBP, breaking new ground at the age of 60.
