Quake Lewellyn, who was charged with hitting a truck driver and raping Sydney Sutherland while he was dying, pleaded guilty to capital murder and rape on Friday and was sentenced to life imprisonment without release conditional.
Lewellyn escapes the death penalty by pleading guilty to the death of Sydney Sutherland, 25, a district nurse who knew her killer, KAIT reported.

Sydney Sutherland Murder Case
Jackson County officers received a call on 19th August regarding Sutherland’s disappearance. Authorities found her iPhone in a field near her home on 20th August.
Police said in the affidavit that Lewellyn saw Sutherland drive down County Road 41 before vanishing and a search of his phone found evidence of the case.
“During a consent search for Quake Lewellyn’s phone, agents found a location service app that tracks the phone’s geographic location.”
“About an hour after the discovery of Sutherland’s disappearance, Lewellyn’s whereabouts request indicated that he was in a geographic location approximately 2.36 miles from Sutherland’s phone,” the affidavit states.
Sutherland’s body was found on Aug. 21, just yards from where the app listed Lewellyn’s location, authorities said in the affidavit.
Quake Lewellyn Reached Plea Deal
Quake Lewellyn, 29, of Jonesboro, pleaded guilty to murder and rape in a Jackson County courtroom on Friday and waived a jury trial.
After pleading guilty, the judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole. You will not incur the death penalty.
He had been charged with the murder, rape, kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse in the death of Sydney Sutherland in 2020.
Before reaching a deal with prosecutors, prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty if a jury convicts Lewellyn of capital murder.
