PTI Welcomes A Stand-by Arrangement With The IMF

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday said it welcomes the Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to ensure macroeconomic stability by anchoring external financing and sound policies ahead of to ensure national elections.

The statement was issued by the PTI after the IMF team called party leader Imran Khan at his residence in Lahore. The meeting was attended by IMF Country Head Nathan Porter, who attended virtually from Washington, and local representative Esther Pérez Ruiz.

The statement said the party “supports the general aims and essential guidelines”.

“We welcome the SBA’s preservation of macroeconomic stability by anchoring external financing and sound policies ahead of national elections scheduled for this fall and pending the formation of a new government.”

“We want to emphasize the importance of programs aimed at protecting low-income populations from high inflation,” the statement said.

The statement said the party views political stability and the rule of law as integral to Pakistan’s economic stability. After free, fair, and timely elections in line with the constitution, a new popular-led government will implement reforms and, in the longer term, work with multilateral institutions to pursue economic transformation, higher growth, and more inclusiveness, he added.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan is also expected to give a speech on the subject. The PTI team that attended the meeting also included Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Hammad Azhar, Shaukat Tarin, Omer Ayub Khan, Dr. Sania Nishtar, Shibli Faraz, Taimur Jhagra, and Muzammil Aslam.
