Power Sector Employees to Get Free Electricity Worth Rs6,000 Monthly

Energy Minister Awais Leghari shared on Wednesday that employees in the power sector receive Rs. 6,000 worth of free electricity each month.

During a press talk in Islamabad, he explained that stopping this benefit for power division and generation company employees is not possible at the moment because of ongoing legal matters.

As a possible solution, he suggested increasing salaries instead of providing free electricity. He also mentioned that efforts are underway to offer surplus electricity at lower rates.

Discussing solar net metering, Leghari pointed out that it has added a financial strain of Rs. 103 billion on regular consumers. He noted that as more people shift to solar energy, the financial burden on general consumers is increasing since the government has to purchase expensive electricity through net metering.

According to him, the objective is to help net metering users recover their costs within four years while keeping the impact on others in check.
