Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif announced that the European Commission and EASA have lifted the ban on PIA flights to Europe. The restriction, imposed in 2020 after a Karachi plane crash and concerns over fake pilot licenses, had cost the airline Rs40 billion annually.
PIA Can Resume Flights to Europe After EASA Lifts Ban
Asif shared the news on X (formerly Twitter.com), describing it as a major achievement. He credited the reforms in the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA), such as restructuring, leadership training, and adherence to international safety standards.
PIA’s operations in Europe now depend on acquiring new aircraft, a key part of its ongoing privatization process. Asif expressed confidence that flights would resume soon and thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for overseeing the efforts.
The European Commission stressed ongoing safety monitoring and regular reviews of Pakistan’s aviation standards to maintain compliance.
