Pakistan, China, And Russia Call On The United States To Recommence Talks With The Taliban
Pakistan, China, and Russia on Friday called on the US to immediately resume the stalled peace talks with the Taliban as they agreed that the 18-year Afghanistan war could end only through negotiations.
Representatives of Pakistan, China, Russia, and the US met in Moscow to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.
High-ranking officials attended the four-party talks, including US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, who spent nine months holding a series of meetings with Taliban leaders in Doha to conclude a peace agreement.
Earlier this month, Islamabad hosted a meeting between Khalilzad and a Taliban delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.
It is believed that the Taliban have been persuaded to agree to a ceasefire, or at least reduce the level of violence, in order to create a favorable environment for the resumption of talks.
A senior official from the Foreign Ministry told The Express Tribune that the Pakistani side in the Moscow Parleys stressed the need to return to the negotiating table. China and Russia also supported Pakistan’s perspective.
One of the reasons why Trump left the peace talks with the Taliban was the assumption that the draft treaty was nothing more than a document of surrender to Washington. The main criticism was the absence of a commitment by the Taliban to agree to a ceasefire or at least reduce the level of violence.
The proposed agreement focused only on a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops and the Taliban’s commitment not to use Afghan soil again for terrorist groups such as al Qaeda.
The Afghan government was also dissatisfied with the proposed agreement as the Taliban refused to initiate talks with the government of Kabul.
The Taliban had insisted all along that they would speak with the Afghan government and other Afghan groups once the agreement with the US was signed.
