Miami police told NBC 6 South Florida that the driver was in an exit lane on the far right of the road, but changed lanes to the left to avoid the exit. The driver was on the bike path while changing lanes and collided with cyclists.
“He ran her over…killed her instantly,” witness Biagio Mazzeo told NBC 6. “It’s very, very sad.”

The accident scene showed the mangled remains of Vera and Reye’s bikes lying side by side, bent wheels and bent pieces of metal scattered across the bike lane’s green paint, and two bent sunglasses on the sidewalk.
The driver’s Jeep SUV was also damaged, with its hood wrinkled, headlights burned out and the windshield shattered.
Police said the driver was cooperative and stayed with police at the crash site for several hours before being released on subpoenas.
“It’s still under investigation, but it’s negligence rather than anything related to alcohol or anything like that,” said Miami Police Officer Michael Vega.
Vera is survived by two teenage sons and Reyes is survived by a 15-year-old daughter.
“[Reyes] was a very beautiful and very athletic young woman,” said Reyes’ neighbor Maria Sanchez.
A neighbor of Vera said her father and children were nearby.
“It’s quite difficult because she got along with her children,” said the neighbor.
Concerns about the safety of cyclists on the Rickenbacker Causeway surfaced 10 years ago after a runaway cyclist was killed. In response to the accident, rumble strips were installed along the lane’s cycle path.
Three years later, another cyclist was killed by a car and the lanes were painted bright green.
Safety advocates are now pushing for far more extensive measures to be put in place on the Autobahn.
Local safety attorney Frankie Ruiz told CBS 4 Miami he advocates a barricade that would completely separate the bike lane from the road.
“I think this idea is real separation, that there is a protected lane for cyclists and pedestrians. Because right now all we have is crumpled ribbons and green paint.”
