What Was The Incident?
Nikkita Brown said the officer approached her on 28th August as she was walking her dog in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood and told her to leave the area immediately.
She said she left the park as per her instructions when the incident occurred.
Video shows the officer identifying himself and showing his badge at Brown’s request. She also points out that Brown had repeatedly asked the unmasked officer to stay two meters away from her, citing concerns about possible exposure to COVID-19.
“Please don’t. Please respect my space. It’s COVID. Two meters,” Brown said.
“Does this respect your space?” I’m about to handcuff you,” replied the officer.
Brown said she kept telling him “I’m going” and “I’m going” while actively walking towards the exit, but he got out of his car and continued to follow her.
As per the video recorded by Brown which recorded part of the meeting, the officer got out of his car and said, “You can go to jail,” as per the video of Brown who recorded part of the meeting.
Brown’s attorney identified the officer as Bruce Dyker by his badge.
A Chicago Police spokesperson told ABC News earlier this month: “The officer in question was assigned to the office while COPA investigated the video.”
While talking to Brown, with her phone ready to go off-hook, Dyker ran to her and tried to walk towards her.
The physical fight between the two lasted over a minute and Dyker continued to threaten to stop Brown. Finally, there were no arrests.
Nikkita Brown’s Statement
Earlier this month, Brown told Good Morning America she believed she was attacked because she was black and said she hoped her complaint would prevent others from being targeted.
“I passed four children behind me… white men. As soon as I saw the car stop, I looked behind me to see if it meant anything to the kids. He didn’t,” Brown said.
What Police Have Investigated Up Till Now?
The body camera video was released last Thursday by the Civil Police Accountability Office (COPA), the group investigating the incident.
A COPA spokesperson told ABC News the investigation is still ongoing and once completed, COPA will send recommendations to Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown for review.
“At the end of the day, given this incident and his terrible disciplinary record, we want him fired,” Brown’s attorney Keenan Saulter told ABC News.
Dyker filed 24 misconduct complaints against him, three of which resulted in disciplinary action.
