As per the prosecutors, Poole Franklin was driving her Jeep Grand Cherokee in Des Moines on December 9, 2019 when she saw the 12-year-old boy walking on the sidewalk with his brother,
also weak.

“When Poole Franklin saw the children and believed the victim was of African or Middle Eastern descent, she crossed the sidewalk in his vehicle towards the two children and hit one of them,” said a press release from the Ministry of Justice.

The victim suffered cuts and bruises but was not hospitalized.

What Was The Trial?

Richard D. Westphal, acting U.S. attorney for the Southern Borough of Iowa, said Poole Franklin’s actions were insensitive.

“Holding Poole Franklin accountable, not only for her willful acts, but also for the malicious beliefs underlying them, is what our justice system should be and an obligation to deliver fair sentences, adequate deterrents and the public against the new ones. Crimes protect this accused,” he said in a trial brief.

Prosecutors found Poole Franklin had a criminal record at the age of 18, including convictions for robbery, assault and criminal harassment. They also said she had a history of drug addiction and mental illness.

At a pre-verdict hearing, the girl’s father, Poole Franklin, said the attack was a nightmare for her family.

“My hope is gone,” Cesar Miranda said, as per the Des Moines Register.

“My belief that I was free in this country was gone.”

She added, “I don’t hate you because I don’t want to feel what you feel for my daughter. I hope you change because people will never be able to live like this.”

Poole Franklin, 43, pleaded guilty in April to attempting to kill a 12-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl in December 2019.

The justice ministry said it targeted minors “because of their race and national origin”. The boy is black and the girl is Hispanic.
