Hobart man Nicolaas Bester has appeared in court for using social media to threaten former Australian of the Year Grace Tame.
Bester is charged with using a transport service to make threats on three occasions between April and August this year.

Harassment Grace Tame
It is alleged that Mr. Bester posted public messages about Ms. Tame on Twitter, addressing her that reasonable people “would consider a threat at all costs”. Bester appeared in Hobart Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
He pleaded not guilty. Judge Andrew McKee adjourned the case until January 31 and extended Bester’s bail.
Mr. Bester was charged in October. The Twitter account he allegedly used has been suspended. Tame was 2021 Australian of the Year.
Criminal Record
Bester was sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison in 2011 for sexually abusing 10th-grade student Ms. Tame while she was teaching at St Michael’s Collegiate School. Bester was 58 years old at the time.
He was jailed again in 2016 for creating child exploitation material while bragging about his crimes on Facebook and calling Tame’s abuse “incredible”.
In 2019, Bester earned a Ph.D. from the University of Tasmania with scholarship funds, although they are prohibited on the university campus. Tame has campaigned for victims of sexual abuse and their right to a hearing and was named Australian of the Year in 2021.
