Nick Miner Dies in A Car Accident
A high school quarterback was killed early Sunday in Florida while trying to help a motorist stranded by the side of the road, investigators say.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 18-year-old Nick Miner stopped his truck on the side of Dallas Boulevard in Orlando to help another driver who was trapped.
While trying to help, Miner’s truck was hit by another vehicle and overturned. The teenager was thrown from the car and died instantly.
Miner was a senior at East River High School.
East River High School Principal Becky Watson confirmed the tragic death in a Facebook post.
“I know I speak for our entire East River High community when I express the pain I feel at the loss of one of our own,” Watson wrote.
In the statement, Watson said grief counselors will be available for students and staff starting Monday.
Minero’s former teammates remember him as a great footballer and friend. Relatives erected a memorial at the crash site on Sunday, many of whom left words like “I love you” and “I miss you.”
“We work as hard as we can. Hurts. He was the brother of the family. Parker Stoner, Miner’s teammate on the soccer team, told FOX 35, “I wish he was still here.”
A leader on the field and “always the class clown,” as Stoner put it, he was his friend.
“He never gave up, he always gave everything. We always make sure we always give 110%,” he added.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 27-year-old driver of a white Honda Insight traveling north “did not watch” the white miner truck stop on the freeway. Miner had tried to pull the parked car back to the curb when the accident happened.
When Miner’s truck overturned, he also hit a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman who was standing on the side of the road in front of the other car. They were taken to the hospital with no immediate danger to their lives.
The person who caused the accident faces charges.
