Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has introduced a new app called Edits, that will compete with ByteDance’s widely-used video editing app, CapCut. The announcement follows a brief outage of CapCut and TikTok in the U.S. Edits is now available for preorder on the iOS App Store, with an official launch planned for March 13, 2025.
In a video shared on Instagram, Mosseri described Edits as a comprehensive tool for creators. The app offers features like a dedicated inspiration tab, a space to track early ideas, and a high-quality camera. Advanced editing tools such as green screens and video overlays are included, catering to creators familiar with TikTok-style content.

The app will also enable users to share drafts with friends or collaborators and provide Instagram-specific insights for those sharing their videos on the platform. These include a live performance dashboard, engagement metrics for followers and non-followers, and data on which parts of a video viewers tend to skip.
This launch comes as TikTok and CapCut face challenges in the U.S. tied to ByteDance’s connections with China. While Mosseri didn’t directly mention these issues, the timing suggests Meta is offering Edits as a potential alternative for creators navigating this uncertainty.
