Matt Silvestrini Middletown Officer Death Cause of Death
According to a police Facebook post, Matt Silvestrini, an Army veteran, and a local police officer lost his battle with brain cancer on Saturday while surrounded by his family.
Police said Silvestrini was known for his dedication to both his work and his family, which included his two children.
According to the police department, “He has dedicated his life to serving others.”
Before joining the Middletown Police Department in 2012, Silvestrini was a New Haven police officer who served on two tours of duty in Iraq while serving in the US Army. Silvestrini served as an instructor for the Middletown Police Department and as a member of the Emergency Response Team and Firearms Unit.
He was 32 when he was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma in 2016, according to a fundraising page created in September to help the family.
According to the site, he was cancer-free for five years after undergoing brain surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
Silvestrini’s doctor told him in November last year that an MRI showed the tumor had grown. According to the fundraising page, this time it was more aggressive, leaving limited treatment alternatives. As of Sunday, the website had donated $107,000 to his family.
Officials said in the Facebook post that his family appreciates the community’s help in the department’s fundraising efforts for him.
“On behalf of the Silvestrini family, we would like to thank all of the community members who have supported our efforts to raise money for him,” the post reads.
“We ask that you keep the Silvestrini family in your thoughts and prayers, especially as the holiday season approaches,” the message said.
“Though our hearts are heavy, we know that Matt has finally found peace… Riding into the sunset in search of his next adventure!”
