Major Japanese Bike Manufacturers Join Forces To Develop Hydrogen Engines
Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha have received approval from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to establish a Technology Research Association.
The association, called Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology (HySE), plans to work with special members Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Toyota to develop hydrogen engines for small mobility.
The partnership will address issues faced by hydrogen engines such as Fast flame speed and large ignition range, leading to unstable combustion and limited fuel tank capacity in vehicles with restricted mobility.
HySE members will conduct basic research on hydrogen engines, drawing on experiences and relevant technologies from gasoline engines.
HySE members share research responsibilities. Honda will conduct research on the model-based development of hydrogen engines, while Suzuki will conduct fundamental studies on hydrogen engine functionality, performance, and reliability.
Meanwhile, Yamaha will review specifications for a hydrogen tank system and hydrogen tanks for mobility-impaired vehicles.
Kawasaki is responsible for additional equipment required for a fuel system and tanks, as well as equipment installed between the fuel tank and injector.
All four companies are among the most popular motorcycle manufacturers in the world. This means the federation is likely to consider the new technology for its bikes.
