Major General Matthew Holmes’s Cause of Death
An inquest has revealed that the former commander of the Royal Marines took his own life after coming under “significant stress”.
On October 2, 2021, Major General Matthew Holmes was found dead in Winchester, Hampshire.
The inquest found that in the months leading up to his death, Major General Holmes had lost his post as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Marines due to a reshuffle, was struggling with the breakdown of his marriage, and was “angry” about leaving the UK from Afghanistan.
He fought in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, and Northern Ireland and was a pallbearer at Prince Philip’s funeral in 2021.
His widow Lea testified that she was ordered to accept the reorganization, which would see her resign or resign.

His widow Lea testified that she was ordered to accept the reorganization, which would see her resign or resign.
Her husband “was told he had to sign or agree to resign,” she said, adding that the experience was “extremely humbling.”
He said the family went on vacation in August 2021, coinciding with the British and American pullout from Afghanistan.
“This vacation was worse than any other family vacation, and there was the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which I was very concerned about,” he said in the request.
“I got messages from people who were really desperate and trying to do something about it.”
“We have decided to leave the holidays a little earlier”. The last morning, Matt said to me, “That’s it, we’re done.”
When they returned, he said his wife had been reluctant to discuss their divorce.
“He said he didn’t think it was necessary to remove the gun because it posed no threat to anyone,” Sarah Adkins said.
“He loved his children very much,” she added.
“He said the main thing that worries him is how his career ended.”
She said her brother had been “stressed” in the final months of his life.
Jonathan Ball, chief executive of the Royal Marines Association, told the inquest he spoke to Major General Holmes in the weeks leading up to his death.
He claimed the former Royal Marines commander was concerned about “close personal friends” in the Afghan army who had been left behind after the departure.
“He felt like he personally let them down by not helping them,” Ball said.
