Lucas Hernandez Injury
The Bayern Munich star lasted just 10 minutes when he injured his knee ahead of the opening game in Australia.
Hernandez was immediately in distress and had to be stretched out, replaced by his brother Theo.
It was clear the injury was serious and we knew his World Cup was in jeopardy.
But maybe we didn’t know how serious it was.
That’s because Hernandez was considering retiring after tearing the cruciate ligament in his right knee.
That’s according to the French outlet L’Equipe, which suggests his French teammates and mother must have convinced him otherwise.
Hernandez has since undergone successful knee surgery and will now begin rehab in a bid to return before the end of the season.
In a club statement, FC Bayern said: “Lucas Hernández underwent successful surgery on Thursday evening in Innsbruck after a cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee by Professor Christian Fink. The FC Bayern defender will start his rehabilitation in Munich in the next few days. He suffered the injury in the opening game of the World Cup for France against Australia.”
Hernandez’s devastation could well be due to the knee injuries he sustained.
When Bayern bought him from Atlético Madrid in March 2019 for a club-record £68m, he was still recovering from a knee injury that meant he missed most of the 2018/19 season, as well as most of the Beginning of the 2019/20 season.
