Kuwait is Considered As The “Worst Country” For Expats
Kuwait was declared the “worst country for expatriates”. According to the latest InterNations 2023 Expat Insider report, Kuwait is the least desirable place for expats to live and work out of 53 travel destinations.
The report looks at various aspects such as quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, personal finances, and important things for ex-pats. However, Kuwait’s performance in the Expat Insider ranking is consistent with its long trend of disappointing results.
Malte Zeeck, the founder of InterNations, expressed his deep concern at Kuwait’s persistently poor ranking. He pointed out that Kuwait has consistently been among the lowest-ranked countries over the past decade, coming last in 2022 and 2023.
The report shows that Kuwait ranks last in the world in terms of quality of life. Expats in particular expressed dissatisfaction with the limited leisure opportunities. Additionally, almost half of the expats surveyed feel unable to express themselves freely and express their opinions, more than three times the global average.
Kuwait’s healthcare system needs to be improved in terms of availability, affordability, and quality. The report also highlights poor rankings in categories such as local sympathy, friend-finding, culture, and hospitality, all of which contribute to Kuwait being at the bottom end of the ease of settling index.
When it comes to working abroad, Kuwait ranks 48th, with many expats expressing dissatisfaction with their salaries and the inflexible local work culture.
Kuwait also scores poorly on expat essentials and personal finances. Only 34% of expats said they were satisfied with the overall cost of living.
However, there are also some positive aspects to consider, for example, it is relatively easy for expats to find accommodation and adjust to everyday life without having to speak the local language.
Overall, the report paints a bleak picture: only 43% of expats in Kuwait express happiness in their lives. This value is well below the world average of 72%. Collective dissatisfaction with various factors cements Kuwait’s position as the worst country for expatriates.
