Kate Middleton and Prince William will always be grateful to their only friend
Kate Middleton and Prince William are still grateful to a friend of theirs who was reportedly responsible for bringing the couple together after their split in 2007.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared a tweet congratulating jockey Sam Waley-Cohen on winning the Grand National at Aintree in his last horse race by a score of 50-1.
“Congratulations to @swaleycohen on winning the Grand National,” they wrote. “What a way to retire!”
Not only do the couple know Sam personally, who also attended her royal wedding in 2011, but the jockey is said to have been responsible for bringing the couple together after their split in 2007.
Kate and Prince William met in 2001 during their freshman year at the University of St Andrews in Scotland and became friends before their relationship turned romantic. But in 2007 they had a short break.
Friends of the couple, who spoke to PEOPLE at the time, said there was no final moment but a gradual breakup. However, Kate was ready to commit and William was not ready to settle down.

According to the Daily Mail, Sam invited Kate and Prince William to a ‘Freakin Naughty’ themed party at the family’s 17th-century manor house in Oxfordshire, where William wore shorts and a police helmet while Kate dressed up as a nurse. They got back together at the party and were spotted chatting. A few weeks later, they vacationed together in the Seychelles.
While many are crediting Sam for bringing Prince William and Kate Middleton together, he’s timidly played his part in the past. Fans love the idea of someone rounding up the lovebirds, but they’re rounding up a whole lot more.
