José Assis Giammaria is a Brazilian researcher imprisoned in Norway. He is accused of spying for Russia. Investigators believe a man posing as a visiting professor at the University of Tromso in the sensitive Far North has used a false identity.
Norway’s Internal Security Agency has arrested a man posing as a Brazilian academic suspected of being a Russian spy.
“We have requested that a Brazilian researcher from Tromsø University be expelled from Norway because we believe he poses a threat to fundamental national interests,” Deputy Director of the Police Security Service (PST), Hedvig Moe, told the public broadcaster NRK.

A Brazilian national was arrested on Monday morning on his way to work in Tromso. PST thinks he is Russian and works for the Russian secret service.

PST believes the man is a so-called “illegalist,” meaning someone who forged an identity as an ordinary citizen while quietly working for foreign intelligence agencies.
– We have asked that a Brazilian researcher from the University of Tromsø be expelled from Norway because we believe he poses a threat to fundamental national interests, Hedvig Moe, deputy director of the PST, told NRK.
Statement Of The Russian Embassy
The Russian embassy said in an email to NRK that they did not know who or what he was.

Illegal Intelligence Suspect
PST wrote on its Twitter account that the man is suspected of violating Section 121 of the Criminal Code, illegal information that can harm fundamental national interests.
He is also suspected of violating Article 126b of the Criminal Code, which deals with illegal information that could harm the security interests of other states. PST has launched an investigation into the allegation and is writing more.
Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl told NRK that the PST had asked the Justice Department to consider revocation of residence permits and deportation.
– The ministry did it, and according to the information available to us, a warning was issued because of withdrawal of residence and deportation, says Mehl.
She also considers it essential that the Services follow this properly and correctly.
– The government has strengthened the police and PST to detect and prevent espionage and sabotage, with a focus on Northern Norway.
