At age 14, Rensenbrink made his first foray into politics by writing a letter to the editor supporting Harold Stassen, the governor of Minnesota. The Minneapolis Star Journal published the correspondence. It was the first of many letters to the editor that would appear in this publication over the next few years. Rensenbrink led a powerful campaign to impeach the mayor of Grand Rapids while he was still a student.
He soon joined the Young Republicans at the University of Michigan in 1951-52, but soon grew weary of Joe McCarthy’s politics. 1984 proved to be a turning point for Rensenbrink. He had heard about the election of the Green Party candidates in what was then West Germany when he was in Poland the year before.
They won 27 seats in the national parliament. Rensenbrink stopped in Munich and Frankfurt that summer on his way back to the United States to meet friends who had joined Germany’s Green Party and we’re celebrating his surprise victory in Parliament.
In 1966-1967, Rensenbrink worked to start Merrymeeting Community Action (MCA) on Maine’s central coast. After the unexpected death of their father in 1943, John Rensenbrink and his brother Henry continued to run the dairy farm. Rensenbrink, unable to graduate from high school, enrolled in a distance learning program offered by the American School of Chicago.
