A man battled a shark and survived Bamboo for 20 hours after falling off a cruise ship.
James Michael Grimes has no idea how he fell overboard, but he insisted he wasn’t drunk despite winning a guitar competition on the ship.
The 28-year-old says he walked on water and ate bamboo after bathing in the water with 18 family members on a Thanksgiving cruise last month.
In an interview with Good Morning America, he said he doesn’t have “tons” of alcohol but “can’t say how much he’s consuming.”
Skeptics are now questioning his version of events, particularly how he could not have known how he had gone too far and how much alcohol he had consumed prior to the incident.
Grimes believes he fell overboard and knocked him unconscious before entering the water without the ship being in sight nearby.
Rescued From Ocean
The Coast Guard rescued him on 24th November. James had spent Thanksgiving on the five-day cruise with 18 family members, including his parents and sister, as the ship headed for Cozumel, Mexico.
James also says he was forced to fend off a shark that was floating in the water after falling overboard.
He added: “I thought it was a shark. I mean, I swam in one direction and looked around. I saw it out of the corner of my eye and it quickly jumped on me and went under and I could see it and it wasn’t a shark.”
“But he had a flat mouth and he came up and hit one of my legs and I hit him with the other leg. It scared me, I didn’t know what it was or in the “I could only see a fin. Grimes was “at his limit” when a team arrived to help save his life, Richard Hoefle, a US Coast Guard survival technician, said at the time.”
He told 4WWL: “Mr. Grimes had nothing left. I had no energy. He had nothing more to give. My best estimate is that he had between a minute and 30 seconds left before we lost him completely.”
James struggles in the water in Coast Guard footage from the rescue. He states that they circled the ship two or three times to find it. James pulled his socks off my socks and waved them around his head, hoping the light they cast would see him.
He heard the crew say they found it before a rescuer got out of a helicopter and headed straight for it. James was told to hold on to a life jacket and described his savior as a guardian angel. Rescuers swam to him as fast as they could and he collapsed in a rescue sling. It was said that he was exhausted and could no longer give.
