Cocaine Transport in Newcastle
Mr. Blee is the son of James Blee, a Far North Queensland superyacht owner who faces multiple charges after a diver was killed and more than 50kg of cocaine was found in Newcastle Harbour.
The body of Brazilian Bruno Borges was found near packs of cocaine in May.
The 31-year-old man had gone scuba diving to try to retrieve the cocaine.
The cocaine cargo had been tied to the hull of a bulk carrier named ARETI.GR, which had set sail from Argentina.
James Blee Senior, 62, was arrested at Cairns Airport two days later while attempting to board a flight bound for Singapore.
He has since been charged with manslaughter at Borges and human trafficking.
An Interpol alert is ongoing for a second suspected diver, 32-year-old Brazilian Jhoni Fernández Da Silva.
Defense attorney Alex Somers said Blee Junior’s involvement was “short-lived” and ‘peripheral’.
Judge Geoff Dunlevy underscored the seriousness of the charges.
“That’s the situation where these particular crimes are ‘justifications’ because they are criminal activities that cause harm to the community,” he said.
“It’s hard to accept that he was involved ‘on the periphery.”
“Money is the lifeblood of crime anyway, especially drug-related crime.”
Mr. Blee Junior is due to appear in court at Downing Center District and Magistrates’ Court on 16th November the same day as his father’s next appearance.
