In 5 Years All Taxis in Dubai Will Be Environmentally Friendly
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) board approved a proposal to convert all taxis in Dubai (Dubai Cabs and chartered commercial taxis) to hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles by 2027. This strategy would be consistent with Dubai’s strategy. Supreme Energy Council, Green Economy Initiative.
Mattar Al Tayer, RTA General Manager and Chairman of the Board, said:
The plan to convert taxis into eco-friendly vehicles reflects the guidelines of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to optimize energy use and promote environmental sustainability in the UAE Emirates. RTA has taken decisive steps to create a safe, clean, and sustainable environment that lives up to Dubai’s reputation. This initiative supports the Dubai government’s efforts to introduce eco-friendly vehicles and promote a cleaner environment.
RTA has already converted 72% or 8,221 of Dubai’s taxi fleet to green vehicles. This achievement coincides with maximizing energy efficiency, promoting a sustainable environment, and establishing Dubai as a frontrunner in promoting green mobility.
Al Tayer noted that the proposal is consistent with RTA’s goal of making all public transport zero emissions by 2050. Al Tayer added:
The results of green vehicle experiments that RTA began testing in 2008 confirmed the environmental benefits of reduced carbon emissions, fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and reduced noise levels. Hybrid vehicles also last longer than conventional vehicles and cost less in the long run. They are characterized by lower purchase prices, maintenance costs, fuel costs, insurance premiums, and other related costs, which can be as much as 50% of normal vehicles.
