Huu Can Tran is responsible for a fatal shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park. Law enforcement sources said Tran died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a shopping center parking lot near Sepulveda and Hawthorne Boulevards in Torrance.
“The motive is still unclear to us,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.
Two law enforcement sources said the suspect recently showed up at Hemet police station and said his family was trying to poison him.
“The investigation is ongoing… we want to know how something so horrible could have happened,” Luna said.

Monterey Park California Shooting
The search for the shooter began after he opened fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio on West Garvey Avenue at approximately 10:20 p.m. Saturday, ten people were killed and ten others were injured. It was New Year’s Eve.
Authorities said about 20 minutes after the Monterey Park shooting, Tran entered the Lai Lai ballroom and studio near the Alhambra.
“The suspect went in there, probably with the intention of killing two other people,” Luna said.
“But two parishioners disarmed him, seized his gun and the suspect fled.”
At 10:20 a.m. Sunday, police found the white van seen leaving the scene of the shooting, Luna said.
As officers got out of their squad car to contact the occupant, they heard a shot from the van.
Suspect Found Dead
At 1 o’clock. m., a SWAT team determined that the suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the man in the van was Tran, the suspect in the mass shooting. A search of the van uncovered multiple pieces of evidence linking the suspect to both locations. Authorities said a handgun was found inside the van, whose license plates were stolen.
“I can confirm that there are no prime suspects,” Luna said.
The weapon that parishioners brought to Alhambra was a magazine-equipped semi-automatic assault pistol with an extended magazine, authorities said. This particular extended-magazine firearm is illegal in California.
Police Investigation Report
A release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department identified the suspect as an adult Asian male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. One picture showed the man in a black leather jacket, hat, and glasses.
Tran lived in Hemet West Lakes, an RV park referred to as “A 55+ Active Living Community,” according to public records and law enforcement sources. A security guard turned a Times reporter away at the front gate Sunday night.
“I still have questions in my head, which is what was the motive of this shooter? Did he have a mental illness? Was he a perpetrator of domestic violence? How did you get these guns legally? the questions need to be answered going forward,” US Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) said at a news conference Sunday night.
Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese said law enforcement first responders were “some of my younger officers,” many of whom have only been on the streets a few months.
“When they got to the parking lot, there was chaos. There were injuries. People tried to run out of every door,” said Wiese.
They entered the building within minutes of arriving, Wiese said, to a scene of carnage “none of them were prepared for.”
