Hubert And June Malicote Died 20 Hours Apart

Within hours, a man and woman who had been married for almost 80 years and both aged 100 died holding hands.

In 1941, Hubert and June Malicote married after meeting at the Church of God in Hamilton, Ohio.

The couple died at Hamilton Hospice on 30th November and 1st December, 8 hours apart.

According to his obituary, “Hubert preceded June’s death by just hours, marking the end of their 81-year love affair.”

The day before Thanksgiving, the Malicotes hosted a family-friendly pizza night as part of their celebration. Sam Malicote, her 76-year-old son, told the Dayton Daily News that “everything was perfect.”

However, June became ill that night and her 70-year-old daughter, Jo Malicote, placed her in a hospice. Sam claims Hubert went to his wife’s house on Friday after Thanksgiving and “broke down.”

Sam commented, “It really fell apart.”

Hubert is admitted to the hospice in the same room as June and both fall asleep. Her hands were connected.

Both lost consciousness before waking up. Hubert died at 9:15 p.m., June at 5:40 p.m. Sam said Hubert died of a “broken heart”.

The couple’s son claimed, “They dated.”

In 1942, Hubert joined the US Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during World War II. He married June on his second leave from the army, not knowing if or when he would be coming home. After the war, Hubert returned home and worked as operations manager for Diebold Inc. until his retirement in 1990.

“In retirement, nothing gave him more joy than his family and his studies,” says Hubert’s obituary.

June worked for Pillsbury and Woolco for many years.

According to his obituary, he was “very pleased with the achievements of his sons and supported each of them in their endeavors”.

Earlier this year, the couple celebrated their 79th wedding anniversary. On July 13, June turned 100, and her husband 100 years later.

Jo, Sam, and Theresa McBride, three of the couple’s 68-year-old children, along with seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, are alive.

Sam told the newspaper: “I’m feeling down, even though I shouldn’t.”

Who could reasonably expect to live such a life? They shared a long and fulfilling life together, devoted to family and to God.

A wake will be held at the Eaton Road Church of God on Thursday.
