High Alert is Issued As Pakistan Officially Confirms First Case Of Monkeypox

On Tuesday, the Ministry for Regulation and Coordination of National Health Services announced that Pakistan has registered its first case of monkeypox in a person who traveled from another country.

Health Ministry officials said the person arrived in Pakistan on April 17 after being deported from Saudi Arabia and showed symptoms of monkeypox.

The National Institute of Health in Islamabad has confirmed the person is infected with the virus and his family members are being tested and ordered to remain in quarantine to prevent the virus from spreading.

Contact tracing has also begun and airports across the country have been placed on high alert. Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus that is transmitted to humans through physical contact with infected animals, contaminated equipment, or an infected person.

Symptoms include a rash, mucosal damage, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, lack of energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

Supportive care is the standard treatment for monkeypox, and vaccines and treatments designed for smallpox can be used in some cases.

Monkeypox is a rare disease and the current global outbreak that began in May 2022 has affected more than 78,000 people. The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation and advising affected countries.
