Testifying before the NSW High Court for a second day, Hanny Papanicolaou said she had no recollection of killing Marjorie Welsh at her home in Ashbury on January 2, 2019.
She says she felt “depressed and panicked” that morning and tried to call her best friend several times but never answered.

“I see Marj … the sound of the machine makes me open my eyes and get up, I don’t know what I’m doing, I just see Marj in front of the fridge with a lot of blood,” he said.
“The blood is on my hands, she was holding the knife … I grabbed the cloth and ran.”
Ms. Welsh died in hospital six weeks later, but not before giving two police interviews in which she described being brutally beaten by “Hanny the housekeeper” before sounding her medical alert.
Prosecutor Christopher Taylor cross-examined why Papanicolaou left her in a pool of blood, pottery, and a broken walking stick stabbed in the stomach and chest without asking for help.
Taylor said that after the attack, in a desperate attempt to find money, he entered two rooms and left a trail of blood in a closet.

Earlier in the morning, the regular player on the poker machines lost $430 in less than an hour and was down to $11 in her bank account, the judges were told.
Taylor said the house cleaner jumped the back fence to avoid being spotted and tried to pass it off as a random home invasion when confronted by Ms. Welsh.
After the alarm went off, Papanicolaou said all he could think about was his baby, but the crown had asked him why he turned off the lights in the house at that time.

Previously, Papanicolaou told jurors that she had felt increasingly isolated in an unhappy marriage, that she was deeply depressed and that she had escaped her problems by gambling.
Papanicolaou only remembers that she ran away with the knife, which she wrapped in a white cloth, which she then threw at him.
Crowning the case, Papanicolaou discovered that Mrs. Welsh had received $8 million from the sale of a property and figured she would be on vacation until the end of January.
