What Were The Details Of An Incident?
A Tampa, Fla. police officer who was filmed dragging a handcuffed woman into jail has been fired, authorities said.
An internal investigation found that former officer Gregory Damon violated department policies during the Nov. 17 incident, the Tampa Police Department said in a news release Tuesday.
The woman was arrested for trespassing, according to a statement. Body cam video shows her refusing to exit Damon’s vehicle while it is parked at Orient Road Jail, telling the officer, “I want you to pull me away.”
Damon then pulls the woman out of the vehicle and throws her by the arm onto a concrete floor, pausing once to tell her to get up, but the woman refuses. Damon drags the woman to a door and then calls other officers for help before interrupting the body camera video released by the Tampa Police Department.
The agency revised its guidelines in 2013 to prohibit officers from targeting uncooperative suspects. Instead, officers should seek help from prison search staff or other law enforcement agencies, police said. Damon has been with the Tampa Police Department since 2016.
Fired
The TPD was reportedly alerted to Damon’s actions by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. He was relieved of his post on 18th November pending the completion of the investigation.
“Not only is professionalism expected, but it is also required that whenever our officers encounter the public, the arrestee must react in an uncooperative or obnoxious manner,” Acting Police Commissioner Lee Bercaw said.
“The actions of this former officer were unacceptable and will not be tolerated in this department so we acted quickly by opening an internal investigation, removing him from his position, and eventually firing him.”
Before his release, Damon had been a forced patrol officer since August 2016.
Damon’s firing is just the latest in a series of scandals for the Tampa Police Department, which made headlines earlier this month when Chief Mary O’Connor flashed her badge to exit a golf cart stop. O’Connor was then placed on leave pending an investigation.
She apologized for her “poor judgment” in a statement.
“I personally called the Pinellas County Sheriff and offered to pay for any subpoenas,” he said at the time.
