Govt Reveals Reason For Power Outage That Has Paralyzed Pakistan
The National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) completed a preliminary investigation into the power outage that affected most of the country on 23rd January.
According to the report, the outage was caused by a frequency fluctuation emanating from Guddu early Monday morning. As a result, Guddu’s 500 kV lines tripped.
Guddu’s frequency before the blackout was 50 MHz. However, it suddenly shot up to 57MHz, taking the transmission lines offline. This caused a domino effect in which the transmission lines in Tarbela, Mangla, and Warsak were also severed.
Starting at 7:34 am., most of the country, including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, and other major cities, experienced a power outage lasting several hours.
NTDC teams immediately intervened to restore power. It took them several hours to fix the problem. Power was restored to most of the country as of Monday evening.
At a press conference on Tuesday, 24th January, Federal Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan suspected a cyber attack to have caused the power outage. He added that while the likelihood of hackers being involved is low, NTDC would investigate to rule them out.
