Elyzza Guajaca Dies While Fleeing Street Runners
Los Angeles police are looking for a culprit after a nursing student was killed in an unauthorized “street takeover” in a Christmas Day run-over by a speeding car.
At 9 p.m. On Christmas Day, more than 100 people gathered to watch Los Angeles drivers flaunt their cars at a large illegal rally in the Hyde Park area.
But chaos ensued when a motorist lost control of his vehicle.
The Los Angeles Police Department reported that on the northwest corner of Florence Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard, “a vehicle conducting a speeding demonstration during an illegal street impound lost control, veered off the roadway, and collided with a group of bystanders.”
The 24-year-old victim who burst into the crowd during the street takeover has been identified as Elyzza Guajaca. She was pinned against a utility pole by the black Chevrolet Camaro, causing her serious injuries.
Guajaca was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined her injuries had caused her death.
Witnesses filmed the serious collision, in which many other people were injured. At least two bystanders fell to the ground and the Camaro driver hit the third person.
Police say these victims were abducted by others but have not yet reported the crimes.
“We are releasing videos and photos of these other victims in the hope that someone will know who they are,” said LAPD detective Ryan Moreno.
At least some of the victims had serious injuries, police said. Moreno commented, “As far as we know, maybe they’re lying in a hospital somewhere.”
The detective believes that Los Angeles street racing culture folks have a code of silence that prevents victims from speaking up.
“The victim of a near-fatal caning may choose not to claim their position as a victim. That’s how things work,” he said.
The suspect, who was last seen fleeing the scene after exiting his Camaro, is wanted by police and is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts.
Although the car was found, investigators are still looking for the driver, other witnesses, and new victims.
Guajaca’s family started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his funeral expenses.
“My sister was an aunt to my beautiful daughters who loved her dearly,” wrote her brother Louie Guajaca. He called Elyzza “the rock of our family” and described her as “a good, goofy, funny, outgoing person”.
