Dubai Includes List Of Cities Regulating Self-Driving Vehicles
Dubai has announced a new law regulating driverless vehicles in the emirate. The law, enacted by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to create a regulatory framework that encourages the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in transportation.
The Highways and Transport Authority (RTA) will be responsible for regulating the operation of autonomous vehicles, including developing policies and setting technical, operational, and safety standards. The law should also attract investment in the sector.
RTA will require licenses for all activities related to driverless vehicles after the implementation of the new law. The regulations set out the conditions for obtaining a permit, including passing the RTA technical exam and being able to read road signs.
In terms of penalties, violations carry fines ranging from AED 500 to AED 20,000, with a maximum fine of AED 50,000 for multiple violations within a year.
In addition to regulating driverless vehicles, the new law establishes permitting procedures and the responsibilities of operators, agents, and passengers.
It also regulates the obligations of operators in the event of an accident and obliges them to cover all damage resulting from accidents. Authorized agents must manage the sale and transfer of driverless vehicles in the emirate and any transfer of vehicles between operators must be pre-approved by RTA.
Under the new law, all government agencies in Dubai must work with RTA to support their responsibilities in regulating the driverless vehicle industry.
