Dubai Duty-Free Increases Sales By 78% As Tourism Recovers

Annual Dubai Duty-Free sales in 2022 have grown by a staggering 78%, signaling the recovery of tourism in the emirate.

Annual revenue reached 6.34 billion dirhams ($1.73 billion) last year, beating its own forecasts amid rising passenger traffic at the world’s busiest international airport.

The forecast for last year was 5.1 billion dirhams ($1.4 billion), but statistics confirm that the facility will continue to attract more tourists in the future.

“We are delighted to report such a positive year with the return of travel as operations have grown from strength to strength,” said Colm McLoughlin, executive vice president, and general manager of Dubai Duty-Free, in a statement Monday.

In terms of staff, as of January 2022, the number was 4,000 but the current workforce is 4,663.

The details confirm that sales per day reached 46,912 last year, while 47,302 million units of goods were sold for the full year.

What sold more?

Perfumes were the best-selling items in 2022 with sales of 1.13 billion dirhams. They contributed 18% to total sales. Alcohol, gold, cigarettes, tobacco, and electronics followed.

Alcohol sales reached Dh1,021 million and accounted for 16% of total annual sales, while gold recorded sales of Dh629.29 million and contributed 10% of total sales.

Cigarettes and tobacco ranked fourth with sales of AED 562.35 million or 9% of total sales, while electronics ranked fifth with sales of AED 502.20 million or 8% of total sales.

Online sales accounted for 2.54% of total sales in 2022, reaching 161.2 million dirhams.

Sales in the airport’s departure area across operations contributed 5.57 billion dirhams or 88% of total annual sales. On the other hand, the passenger arrival sales amounted to 573.38 million dirhams or 9% of the total annual turnover.
