The alleged Houston school shooting at YES Prep Southwest involved a former student, Dexter Kelsey, who injured 25-year-old manager Eric Espinoza after pushing his way through a closed glass door. Espinoza was rushed to downtown Houston Medical Center for surgery. While his condition is serious, his chances of survival are high.
Police reported that Kelsey surrendered without much resistance. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner expressed relief that no children were injured, noting the situation “could have been a lot worse.” He added, “No child or person should see this in the world we live in.”
A seventh-grade student, who wishes to remain anonymous, described the chaotic scene: “I saw blood and shattered glass. My teachers told me to stay in the classroom and the officers told us to put our hands up and go outside.”

Relatives and two sources have confirmed that 25-year-old Dexter Kelsey is the alleged shooter. Kelsey’s family stated that police contacted them on Friday to inform them that he was in custody.
According to a police source, Kelsey confessed to the shooting, explaining that he heard voices and was not targeting the principal, but another employee.
What Police Have Investigated Up Till Now?
The Houston Police Department confirmed that a suspect is in custody and officers are still searching for any other potential suspects on the YES Prep Southwest campus. The scene remains active. The school also issued a statement reassuring families, stating, “No students were injured” and urging them not to come to the school as police were blocking streets. They informed parents that students were being transported to W. Fuqua and Hiram Clarke for pickup.
In a press release, the school expressed empathy for the traumatic situation, saying, “We cannot imagine the terror felt during the events. This shocking incident should not be faced alone.” They assured that counselors would be available over the weekend, next week, and throughout the school year to provide support.
