David Gold Dies At The Age Of 86
The 86-year-old WEST HAM co-chairman David Gold has died.
After a short illness, he died on Wednesday morning along with his fiancee Lesley, and their daughters Jacqueline and Vanessa.
Gold, a lifelong Hammers fan and longtime business partner of David Sullivan, acquired the team in 2010.
The Hammers are planning an extensive tribute to gold in the coming days.
In a moving statement, Sullivan said: “On behalf of everyone at The Football Club, we are deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague and friend David Gold.”
“Of all our joint ventures, none has made us more proud and happier than the day we took over West Ham United, our club, in January 2010.”
“David had a long association with the Hammers, growing up opposite the Boleyn Ground on Green Street and representing the club at junior level.”
“He always wanted what was best for West Ham United and his death is a great loss for all of us.”
Manager David Moyes, who has been twice appointed by Gold, added: “I am very saddened by this news.”
“On behalf of all the players and my staff at the training ground, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to the David Gold family at this very difficult time.”
“Mr. Gold has been a regular visitor to Rush Green and has always been a source of great support and encouragement to me and the players.”
“It was clear he genuinely and genuinely loved the club and at heart, he was a true supporter.”
“He took a keen interest in the people who worked behind the scenes and was always willing to help wherever he could. He will be greatly missed.”
Irons Vice President and close friend Karren Brady said: “To a great man, a great friend of over 30 years and a consummate gentleman.”
“We will miss you. Rest in peace X.”
A longtime West Ham supporter, Gold grew up at 442 Green Street, just across from the old Boleyn Ground, commonly known as Upton Park. Gold was born in Stepney in September 1936.
From the age of 13 to 16, he played as a talented young student for the club’s men’s team. He then made an appearance for the youth team.
Gold also served as President of the City of Birmingham until 2009.
Curtis Woodhouse, an ex-Blue, also paid an emotional tribute to his former owner.
He wrote: “Really sad to hear the news of David Gold’s death.”
