David Bennett, who received the world’s first pig heart transplant, has already stabbed a man seven times, leaving him paralyzed, his victim’s family have revealed.
Bennett was found guilty of stabbing Edward Shumaker in 1988; Her sister narrated Radio 4’s Hoy program.

Leslie Shumaker Downey said her brother died from the attack in 2007 after nearly two decades of medical complications.
He said Mr. Bennett was an unworthy beneficiary of groundbreaking surgery.
But the team that performed the operation said a person’s criminal record could never be a reason to deny them treatment.
The attack took place in April 1988 when Bennett’s wife was sitting on 22-year-old Shumaker’s lap, Downey said.
In an apparent fit of jealousy, Mr. Bennett repeatedly stabbed Mr. Shumaker in the back.
Mr. Bennett was sentenced to 10 years in prison for assault and assault and carrying a concealed weapon.
Ms. Downey said no one had contacted her because Mr. Bennett had received the pig’s heart and she only heard the news after her daughter texted her.
“My second daughter immediately texted me and said, ‘Mom, this is the man who stabbed Uncle Ed.’ Then I read the story and I was mad that she got the heart,” she said.

Mr. Bennett is recovering after the seven-hour experimental procedure in Baltimore.
The transplant was viewed as the last hope of saving Mr. Bennett’s life, although his chances of long-term survival remain unclear.
But Mrs. Downey said she didn’t think he deserved the heart.
“They put Bennett in the scripts and portrayed him as a hero and a trailblazer, but he’s not like that,” he said.
“I think the doctors who operated should get all the credit for what they did, not Mr. Bennett.”
