Coach Joe Gibbs said, according to NBC Sports, “When I think of Dave, I think of all the spectacular plays he’s made for us over the years.” This was discussed after leaving the game.
“I remember playing for the New York Jets two years ago after being discharged from the hospital. After making one of the biggest plays in the game, he returned to the hospital.”
The commanders tweeted Friday that they were ‘heartbroken’ after the news of Butz’s death. Butz was a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team in the 1980s, a member of the Washington Ring of Fame, and a member of its top 90 lists.
Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann also expressed his condolences, writing, “A close friend passed away today. Doug Butz used to bike to games with Dave Mark Mosley a true gentle giant. Peace be with you, dear friend.”
